Il est difficile de dire quand se termine le Moyen Age et quand commence la Renaissance: qui travaille sur l'Italie du XVème siècle se dit historien de la Renaissance, mais celui qui travaille sur la France de la même époque est clairement un médiéviste. Certains font commencer la Renaissance avec la chute de Constantinople, d'autres avec l'invention de l'imprimerie ou bien encore la découverte de l'Amérique ou aussi le début de la Réforme protestante. En ce qui concerne l'art en France, et plus précisément l'architecture, on pourrait retenir 1515, cette date bien connue de tous les élèves qui correspond aux guerres d'Italie de François I, moment où la France s'ouvre vraiment à la Renaissance. Toutefois, cette date, comme aucune autre, ne peut être considérée comme un couperet: des influences italiennes se font parfois sentir avant cette date et on construira encore en style gothique longtemps après.

It is extremely difficult to say when the Middle Ages ends and when the Renaissance begins: he who works on 15th century Italy is clearly a historian of the Renaissance, but the one who is concerned with 15th century France is considered a medievalist. Some scholars date the beginning of the Renaissance from the fall of Constantinople, others from the invention of printing, or also the discovery of America or even the start of the protestant Reformation. Regarding art in France and more specifically architecture, one might accept 1515, this date known by all French pupils and which reminds them of King François I's wars in Italy, the moment when France actually opened up to the Renaissance. However, this date, like any other, cannot be considered as a strict limit : Italian influences had already been felt before 1515 and Gothic architecture survived several decades after this date.
