Le roi Philippe Auguste a joué un rôle important dans la ville puisque c'est lui qui l'a prise à Richard 1er d'Angleterre (dit Richard Coeur de Lion) en 1096.
L'année suivante, pendant que Richard construisait le fameux Château Gaillard aux Andelys (là où passait la nouvelle frontière du Duché de Normandie), Philippe Auguste mettait Vernon en état de continuer la guerre: construction d'un pont sur la Seine et d'un châtelet (sur le rive droite) pour protéger ce pont et en contrôler la circulation (ce châtelet et quelques arches du pont sont encore visibles), réfection des murailles édifiées par Henri 1er d'Angleterre, et surtout construction d'un château fort au milieu de la ville, dont existent encore de larges parties.

King Philip II (Philippe Auguste for the French) played a particular part in the history of the town since he was the one who conquered it from Richard I of England (Richard Lionhearted) in 1096.
In the following year, while the latter was building the celebrated Château Gaillard in Les Andelys ( the new boundary of the Duchy of Normandy), Philippe Auguste was getting Vernon ready for continuing the war by building a bridge across the river and, on the right bank, a fortified bridgehead to protect and to supervise traffic over this bridge. (This small castle as well as some ruins of the bridge are still visible). He also had the old city walls (built by Henry 1 of England) restored and he erected a castle inside the town, large parts of which still exist today.
